Track Calories Without Weighing Everything

Here's the uncomfortable truth about food scales: for most people, they don't fail because they're inaccurate. They fail because they're annoying. And annoying tools get abandoned.

So this is your permission slip to track calories without weighing food — with the math to back it up.

The scale paradox

A food scale is the most accurate tracking tool you can buy, and that's exactly the problem. Weighing every ingredient turns dinner into a lab procedure. It works at home and collapses the moment you eat at a restaurant, at a friend's place, or out of a shared pan. One skipped day becomes three, and the log dies quietly.

Research on self-monitoring keeps landing on the same finding: how often you log predicts results, not how precisely. A 2019 study in Obesity ("Log Often, Lose More," Harvey et al.) found logging frequency significantly predicted weight loss — and that successful trackers got faster over time, from about 23 minutes a day in month one down to about 15 by month six. The habit compounds. The scale rarely survives long enough to.

Why ±20% beats ±2%, mathematically

Say your estimates are off by up to 20% per meal, randomly — sometimes high, sometimes low. Random errors partially cancel. Over a week of logging, the error on your average daily intake shrinks to roughly a third of the per-meal error. Your weekly trend — the thing that actually drives decisions — stays usable.

Now compare the alternative: a gram-weighed log with ±2% accuracy that you abandon after twelve days. Its error for weeks three through fifty-two is 100%, because the data doesn't exist.

One honest caveat: this only works if your errors are random. If you systematically ignore the same thing every day (looking at you, olive oil), that bias never cancels. More on that below.

A scale isn't the enemy — permanent scale dependence is. Use it for a calibration week: weigh your repeat meals and your danger foods once, learn what 30g of peanut butter actually looks like, then put the scale away. Recalibrate for a week if your weight trend stalls unexpectedly.   2. Save your three most-repeated meals after estimating them once.

  4. Look only at the weekly average, never a single day.
